Learning & Growing - Aprender & Crecer

Created in 2006, the mission of Aprender & Crecer is to improve educational and life opportunities for students by forming partnerships with public elementary schools where Price Charities provides school supplies and materials so that principals, teachers, parents and students can focus on quality teaching and learning.

PARTNERSHIP
At a cost of $50 per student per year, Aprender & Crecer donates a package of school supplies to each student at selected public schools in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama.  Each teacher also receives a package of materials for use in the classroom and each school receives an assortment of cleaning and paper products.

In exchange for the donation participating schools commit to utilizing the supplies to achieve five critical goals:
  1. Improve student engagement, confidence and enthusiasm;
  2. Increase participation by parents in their children’s education at home and at school;
  3. Improve teaching methods by encouraging collaboration and sharing best practices;
  4. Maintain a clean and safe school environment;
  5. Increase the principals’ ability to lead their schools by focusing their stakeholders and collaborating with colleague principals.

DIRECT BENEFITS
  • A full year of school supplies for 25,000 children
  • Supplemental materials for over 1,000 teachers
  • Supplemental cleaning supplies for 56 primary schools

OTHER BENEFITS
In addition to ensuring that all students have the supplies they need for a high quality educational experience, Aprender & Crecer provides other meaningful benefits:

  • Improves students’ self-esteem and enthusiasm;
  • Contributes to increased student attendance and retention;
  • Improves students’ fine motor skills through use of tools like scissors, paint brushes, and writing instruments;
  • Expands the variety and richness of learning activities in the classroom;
  • Opens a channel of communication between parents and teachers, leading to increased parent participation;
  • Increases support of the school by local businesses and government;
  • Allows parent fundraising to be used for equipment and facility improvements instead of basic supplies.
