As a result of meetings with City Heights residents in 1994, Price Charities learned that safety was then and remains today the community's most important concern. The new police station was the first significant effort to improve community safety. The presence of a permanent police force in City Heights provided a springboard for the introduction of community policing combining a visible police officer presence in the community and local resident patrol volunteers. Patrols range from kids on bikes watching school grounds, parents at street corners along safe routes to school, residents walking the block to report code violations, and to adult patrols at night. The patrols increase the flow of information to police and subsequently reduce crime, vandalism and graffiti. In return, the police department designates Community Resource Officers to be available to take resident's reports and to attend the wide variety of community meetings. This partnership results in improved community - police relationships and reduced crime.
