City Heights Initiative Overview Embracing a philosophy of proactive charitable giving, Price Charities is committed to allocating a substantial portion of its charitable dollars to revitalizing City Heights, a low-income community in San Diego. Since 1994, Price Charities has worked with the community of City Heights to build an "Urban Village" in the core of the community. To this end, Price Charities has funded the City Heights Educational Collaborative. more » Community Development Programs Price Charities is committed to developing innovative ways to engage the community in the revitalization of City Heights and has piloted several novel programs. Community Service Program Price Charities is encouraging the engagement of residents in the community of City Heights by providing service opportunities in local nonprofits. Participants can reduce a portion of their mortgage or rent payments by providing community service. more » Home Loan Program San Diego Revitalization Corporation provides $50,000 down-payment assistance to first-time homebuyers who reside in City Heights and purchase within specified boundaries. Borrowers can pay off the accumulated interest of the loan by performing community service. more » Price Community Builder Fellowship Program In order to build capacity in local nonprofits, Price Charities is sponsoring six recent graduates from the San Diego State School of Social Work to work in six nonprofit agencies in City Heights. more » Housing & Commercial Development The bulk of Price Charities investment in City Heights is focused on major development projects on the main thoroughfares. Price Charities is attempting to bring various funding sources and agencies together to seed both large-scale housing developments and commercial projects. Village Townhomes 116 townhomes in the heart of the Urban Village in City Heights. These 2, 3, and 4 bedroom units were completed in July 2003. more » City Heights Center A six-story office building on University Avenue in City Heights houses primarily nonprofit and public agencies providing services to the City Heights community. more » City Heights Square The City Heights Square project is the development of a portion of the block bounded by University Avenue, Fairmount Avenue, Polk Avenue and 43rd Street. more » Model School Design The Model School Design is a conceptual plan to build a "smarter" urban school through creative land use and by integrating housing into the design. more » Metro Career Center A new 86,000 square foot office building housing a regional job-training center operated by Workforce Partnership was completed in April 2004 at University Avenue by Interstate 15; Price Charities has assisted the City Heights Community Development Corporation with the acquisition of land and entitlements to build 120 affordable housing units on the remainder of the block. more » |
